'OFF THE DEEP END' SYNOPSIS

Book Cover V2.4 .jpg

Off the Deep End is told from the perspectives of two orphaned siblings who navigate their shared tragedies until they experience a sudden reversal of their fortunes with the help of their friends, found-family, a dashing doctor, and political allies.

EMERSON HAWKINS thought he had everything figured out: inspired by his mother’s death on 9/11 to enter the military, planning an eventual political career, and contemplating how to reveal his burgeoning relationship to his father and kid sister. But when a blast kills his boyfriend and leaves him in a wheelchair, he returns and becomes the sole guardian of his sister, AVIEA HAWKINS, after their father’s death. While he tries to pick up the pieces and return to school, Aviea is diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor and enters a coma, seeming to end both his dreams and hers.

Aviea never expected to have an ordinary life, but was hoping to make it to her 15th birthday, at least. But when a charming brilliant researcher, DR. RENFIELD DARIAN, proposes entering Aviea and Emerson into a trial study, they both get their lives back. Aviea wakes up to a world both more wonderful and more tragic than she remembered. Her brother graduates law school and runs for New York Senator. Aviea returns to school but struggles after her recovery, eventually getting diagnosed and treated for a psychiatric disorder, yet she eventually gets a scholarship to a prestigious Manhattan boarding school, otherwise populated with the scions of business moguls and professional athletes.

Both siblings are grateful for a second chance, but it gets complicated by Renfield for Emerson, as their connection quickly moves beyond patient-doctor to something familial and perhaps romantic. At the same time, Aviea meets LENNON SHAH, the charismatic, popular son of MUKESH SHAH, CEO of an international business conglomerate and noted opponent of Emerson’s political platform.

Despite the obstacles, Aviea and Lennon are drawn to each other and date in secret as Emerson struggles with managing his feelings for Renfield against his meteoric political rise. Aviea navigates the challenges of high school among the ultra-rich, balancing both a secret relationship and continued health issues. But will Lennon ultimately both break Aviea’s heart and ruin Emerson’s political ambitions? And would Emerson rather toss away his chance to change the country in favor of the man he loves?

Olivia Sutton is the first-time author of Off the Deep End, who currently lives in Baltimore, MD with her husband and four (yes, four) cats. Throughout her life, Olivia wanted to do two things: write novels and become a doctor. She first fell in love with New York City at medical school at Cornell. There, she served as editor-in-chief of the humanities magazine, Ascensus, in which she published pieces exploring the experience of being a patient, a topic with which she has firsthand experience, growing up with a chronic illness in her teen years. She is currently a resident physician at Johns Hopkins, where she was designated a Health Humanities Fellow for writing short medical fiction. She relishes in the moments between surgeries when she can brainstorm for her novels, often jotting down her ideas on the back of a sterile gauze packet. Most of her published works at this point have been research articles in medical journals, but she looks forward to finally sharing her fiction inspired by the hidden parts of the medical world that are hard to understand from the outside. Beyond the hospital, she loves video games, sewing, hiking, kayaking, and occasionally, this thing called ‘sleep.’
